“Kuleana” – Mixed Media Marine Debris Art

"Kuleana" – Mixed Media Marine Debris Art

Kuleana means “responsibility,” “right,” “concern” and “privilege” in Hawaiian.

Marine debris is any type of litter that ends up in our oceans, seas and other large bodies of water. Any type of debris can get in to the oceans, from glass bottles to aluminum cans, but the majority of the debris is plastic. Once there, marine life can become entangled in the debris or marine debris can be mistaken for food and ingested. All anthropogenic marine debris is preventable. It is everyone’s kuleana to mālama (care for) our world oceans.

The marine debris used in the art piece were collected from O‘ahu’s north shore in May 2018. The artwork was created in collaboration with Pua Borges.
